Got Iron?! Herbal Tea does..


Herbal teas, usually called tisanes and fruit teas, are beverages made from the infusion of herbs, spices, flowers, and fruits. Herbal teas do not usually contain caffeine, so they're great at any time of the day.

Herbal teas are great sources of mineral and nutrients, such as iron, magnesium, calcium, and more! Herbal teas can also contain vitamins such a A,B,C, and K. According to the American Pregnancy Association, red raspberry leaf, dandelion, nettles, and yellow dock all have high amounts of iron.

Iron Absorption

Tannins can inhibit the body's absorption of nonheme iron. Tannis can be found in Black and Green teas but not in herbal teas or tisanes. The body absorbs nonheme iron less efficiently than non heme iron, absorbing only 2% to 20% of it, as compared to the 15% to 35% of heme iron the body typically absorbs.

Calcium also hinders iron absorption, however, so avoid adding milk to herbal tea when drinking it alongside nonheme iron sources.

If you consume high amounts of black and green tea, and you lack iron, herbal teas may just be a great pivot for your daily tea sessions. I love herbal teas solely because of the high mineral content and variety of tastes and fragrances.

Pregnancy and Iron

Minerals are really important for the body. The National Institutes of Health recommends that pregnant women get 27 mg of iron every day. Iron-rich herbal teas can help prevent iron deficiency during pregnancy. According to the American Pregnancy Association, pregnant women can safely drink most commercial herbal teas in reasonable amounts.

Iron Deficiency

According to the CDC, about 9-10% of women suffer from an iron deficiency.

The following are symptoms of iron deficiency:

Fatigue

Difficulty focusing

Apathy

Breathlessness

Unusually pale skin

Lower endurance levels

Sore muscles

Frequent infections

Yellow dock

Dandelion

Nettle leaf

Echinacea

Raspberry leaf

Chamomile

Peppermint
